Today I want to talk to you about a key concept in Kundalini Yoga: spirituality and your spiritual journey. Moreover, let’s also use the opportunity talk about GOD.
Kundalini Yoga and Spirituality are fundamentally related. The origins of the word Yoga, as you may know, go back to the word “yoke”, which is a wooden crosspiece fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to the plough or cart that they pull. “Yoke” and “Yoga” both mean UNITE or join together.
The purpose of yoga is to unite your finite consciousness with the Infinite Consciousness. A yogi is someone who has totally leaned on the Supreme Consciousness – so GOD – until he/she has merged his/her Self with the Infinite Self. Yoga is not doing stretching in tight pants, but it is achieving this union between this ‘finite you’ and the Supreme Consciousness. When you are born, you are separated from the One, and practicing yoga aids uniting again with your origins, so GOD, here living in this human experience.
The concept of G.O.D. is based on the Hindu Trinity, Brahma (Generator), Vishnu (Organiser), and Shiva (Destroyer). Yogi Bhajan also described the nature of this trinity as He-She-It, “heshit”.
At the top of the Ladder of all Being there exists only one pure true Consciousness, the One or G.O.D. – the force that generates (G), organises (O) and destroys (D). God is in every one of us.
Yogi Bajhan says: God is not living on the seventh story, and no lift goes to Him. God is you. He is your expression. He is your identity in existence. That is why God is everywhere.
Wherever we are, God is. We use the technology of Kundalini Yoga and meditation to reach God within us, to find God in ourselves: Consciousness.
I’ll be honest with you. When I started my Kundalini Yoga teacher training, I still had a big difficulty relating to this whole construct of GOD. Although I have a spiritual name it was hard for me to connect to deity and spirituality. So, when I was in the Quinta do Rajo Ashram in Portugal, I approached Shiv Charan Singh with my concern. For those of you who know Shiv Charan, you know that he is an outstanding and authentic spiritual teacher. He only had to ask me one thing:
“Is it GOD, or the manmade construct in religion?”
Religion is not GOD – and this is what had confused me indeed. As Yogi Bhajan says, “If you can’t see God in all, you cannot see God at all.” GOD is not religion, or a manmade construct, GOD simply is.
Humee Hum Brahm Hum – We are We. We are God.
Your spiritual development is an intrinsic part of your Kundalini Yoga practice. It has five parts, called the five stages on the Path of Wisdom.
Saram Pad
– the “honeymoon” period, occurs when you are introduced to the path. This moment, you consciously enter a relationship with your spirit and your spiritual path. It means that you have found a spiritual teacher and you can really feel the blessings of this new gift giving your life new energy.
Karam Pad
– is the Sadhana you do when you are on the path. You begin to work on yourself. This moment you become aware of the work, the issues and the growth needed to maintain a deeper relationship with your spirituality.
Shakti Pad
– The crucial stage, the self-doubt status that you enter after about 7 years into your practice is the Shakti Pad. This is where you will have to confront your own ego. It is the last chance in 8.4 million lifetimes where you can escape the circle of birth and death. Are you going to go on, progress towards mastery, stay at apprentice levels or quit your study all together?
Sahej Pad
– Between Shakti Pad and Sahey Pad, there is no rope, there is no link – it is a leap. Either you leap forward in faith or fall down the base and crash. Sahej Pad is a stage of balance and ease. Everything will fit together. You are using your intuition, and just enjoy the play of life as the Guru works to move the consciousness.
Sat Pad
– You have entered the harmony with the Universe, the stage of Truth. You are the master, you are truly one with GOD. You become Infinite – that which doesn’t change. Then there is no He, no She, no It.
Yogi Bhajan, August 1978
Kundalini Yoga opens the access to your Spiritual Awakening trough integrated mantras in the exercises and meditations. You come to understand your existence in relationship to the universe and the practical experience of Infinity – and this goes far beyond any manmade construct of religion or esoteric concept. This spiritual path is truly you.
